Mental Jukebox: Week of December 15-19 (2014 Year End Countdown Pt 1 of 3)

Monday: Cage The Elephant “Take It Or Leave It”

Can’t believe it’s already time to start the year-end countdown to 2015! I have one extra day to play with here, and far too many great songs that almost-but-didn’t-quite make the Top 10 to choose from. So I’m highlighting a song from earlier this year that I didn’t previously feature on Mental Jukebox. This video (and tune) is SO awesomely retro I was tempted to feature it in Throwback Thursday. Kicking off Monday (and my countdown) with Honorable Mention to “Take It Or Leave It” by Cage The Elephant!

Tuesday: #10 – Alt-J “Left Hand Free”

Mental Jukebox Top 10 of 2014: #10 is UK indie rock band Alt J with “Left Hand Free”. That laid-back funky groove tends to fight off stress and put me in a more mellow mood. If you see me bopping in my chair with headphones on, I’m probably listening to this!

Wednesday: #9 – Night Terrors of 1927 “When You Were Mine”

Number 9 on the Top 10 of 2014 comes from Southern California local band Night Terrors of 1927 featuring Tegan and Sara, “When You Were Mine”. Can’t decide which I love more, the soaring pop melody or the beautiful vocal harmonies. Can’t wait for their debut album Everything’s Coming Up Roses which is now scheduled for release January 20, 2015. Here’s the new official video, just released earlier this month:

Throwback Thursday: Huey Lewis and the News “Power Of Love” (1985)

Taking a break from the 2014 countdown (you were wondering how I was going to get to #1 at the end of the year with only 10 songs, weren’t you?) because Throwback Thursday must be honored. Throwing back to the KDON charts for another year-end countdown #1. Billboard charts aside, this “Power” hit from 1985 blew all the others away in our neck of the woods, from local SF Bay Area boys Huey Lewis & the News (who played many a New Year’s Eve show back in the day as I recall!) “Power Of Love” from the blockbuster film Back to the Future was the band’s first #1 hit and also their first UK Top 10.

Friday: #8 – Kongos “Come With Me Now”

Mental Jukebox’s Top 10 of 2014 continues: #8 is another early in the year fave of mine from South African Arizona-based brothers known as Kongos: “Come With Me Now”. How can you not love a song that incorporates accordion and a driving percussive beat/chant? This is one of the songs that inspired the creation of Mental Jukebox, thanks to its relentless repetition in my head.

Tune in next week for Part 2 of Mental Jukebox’s Top 10 Tracks of 2014 countdown!
